TYPICAL ITINERARY
Begin your 21-night grand cruise onboard Regent Seven Seas Cruises' Seven Seas Navigator from San Francisco and cruise to:
Cabo San Lucas
Twenty years ago Cabo San Lucas, at the southernmost tip of Baja, was little more than a fishing village occasionally visited by itinerant Californian surfers and sport fishermen with the means to sail in or fly down. In recent years, however, it has rapidly become the focal point of Los Cabos, the catch-all term for the beaches and resorts ringing the toe of the peninsula. Condos have sprung up, palms transplanted, water piped in and everything is kept pristine.
Acapulco
Acapulco, nicknamed "Pearl of the Pacific," is Mexico's most glamorous pacific resort. Located on a deep, semi-circular bay, Acapulco is located southwest of Mexico City. Few destinations can match its superb weather with an average of 360 days of sunshine per year and with temperatures comfortably in the 80s. Acapulco was important as a port city for Spanish galleons sailing between Spain and the Orient long before it was "discovered" as a vacation playground.
Huatulco
Huatulco is located in the southern part of the state of Oaxaca. This newly-developed resort area is near the village of Puerto Escondido. The area has nine bays with beautiful beaches, among the cleanest, safest and least crowded on the west coast. Huatulco is targeted for development as a major tourist destination, but with an eye to environmental protection. The government dictates only 5% of the area can be developed in order to keep with ecological regulations.
Puerto Chiapas
Near the border of Guatemala on Mexico's west coast, Puerto Chiapas offers opportunities for cultural and historic tours, as well as eco-adventures. The port was constructed in 1975 as a gate for agricultural goods and to promote tourism. Visitors to this port have access to Palenque, one of the Mayan world's most important archeological sites. Those looking for adventure can try white-water rafting, horseback riding, or hiking through the surrounding jungle.
Puntarenas
Puntarenas, which means "Sandy Point" in Spanish, is the capital and main city in the province Puntarenas, Costa Rica, at the Pacific coast. The oddly-shaped province has its largest section in the South, far from the capital. A mountainous country, Costa Rica ranges from sea level to peaks as high as 13,000 feet and a succession of white, sandy beaches follow one another along the Pacific Coast. The country was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502.
Cartagena
Take a scenic drive through the residential area of Manga, and admire the beautiful mansions built in Republican-style architecture at the end of the 19th century. Explore the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a fort that was once the most important military structure built in Latin America. Enjoy a boat ride to the Islas del Rosario, 26 coral islands located off the coast of Isla Barú, and continue to the island of San Martín de Pajarales to visit the aquarium. Enjoy a spectacular dolphin and shark show and other marine attractions there. Board the beautiful Spanish Galleon, a replica of a 17th-century sailing ship, for a cruise of the inner bay of Cartagena.
George Town
Christopher Columbus discovered the Cayman Islands in 1503 and named them Las Tortugas, because the only inhabitants found were turtles. By 1530, they were known as the Caymanas, meaning "crocodile" in Carib. Although Sir Francis Drake visited the islands in 1568, they did not come under British rule until 1670. The Caymanians are descendants of the English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh seamen who settled the islands and later intermarried with Jamaican immigrants.
Ft. Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale sits in the middle of the burgeoning megalopolis of South Florida, which hugs the Atlantic coast from Miami in the south (a 35-minute car ride away) to Palm Beach in the north. In the city limits alone, there are more than 165 miles of navigable waterways, and more than 42,000 registered yachts. Downtown Fort Lauderdale is peppered with high-rise buildings, sidewalk cafes, bars and shops, creating the perfect location for people-watching!
Port Canaveral
In modern times, the central section of Florida's Atlantic Coast has come to be known as the Space Coast. Though the former Soviet Union won the "space race" by launching the first manned space flight, the U.S. base of operations was Cape Canaveral Air Force Base and its Kennedy Space Center was then home of NASA operations. In stark contrast to the "High Tech" space industry, the surrounding area is a wildlife preserve, and is a major breeding ground for many endangered seabirds.
Charleston
Founded in 1670 by a group of English aristocrats as an intended moneymaking venture, ‘Charles Towne’ swiftly boomed, exporting products from the region’s rice and cotton plantations. The Civil War started on Charleston’s very doorstep at Fort Sumter, strategically situated on an island in the harbor. Combining history and plenty of Southern charm, Charleston is a compelling place to visit. Tour the historic district by horse-drawn carriage and discover stately homes adorned with wooden shutters, ironwork balconies, leafy patios and hidden gardens. Watch Gullah weavers create sweet grass baskets and immerse yourself in this friendly city’s ante-bellum ambiance.
New York City
The ‘City that Never Sleeps’ beckons — renowned museums and sites galore by day; the glittering sophistication of clubs, theaters and restaurants by night. Explore Chinatown, Greenwich Village, the United Nations, Central Park’s Museum Mile and Wall Street’s towering steel and glass monuments to commerce, then hop into a cab for an afternoon of world-class shopping along Park and Fifth Avenues.
