TYPICAL ITINERARY
Set sail from Hamburg on your 7-night Hamburg to Oslo Cruise on Star Flyer. relax and enjoy your holiday as you cruise to:
Stromstad, Sweden
A spa and health resort since the 1890’s, Stromstad is the closest port to Norway on Sweden’s Golden Coast. It claims to have the sunniest weather and saltiest water in Sweden, but Norwegians come here not to take the waters, but the alcohol, which is considerably cheaper here. The nearby Koster Islands are the site of the Kosterhavets National Marine Park, where you can frolic with seals or catch lobsters and crab with a local fishing guide.
Arendal, Norway
Arendal is a sailor’s town, as you will immediately guess when you go ashore. The Tyholmen or old district was originally an island and its elegant timber buildings dating from the 19th century surround the yacht-filled Pollen, or harbour. The Town Hall is a 3-story wooden mansion that belonged to a ship owner. And offshore lies the island of Merdø, with its 1736 sea captain’s home. A short trip south takes you to Grimstad, where Henrik Ibsen lived before becoming Norway’s most famous playwright.
Kristiansand, Norway
Across the Skagarak Strait from Denmark, Kristiansand’s fortress, built by King Christian IV in 1672, stands guard over an orderly grid of little streets, bordered by white frame houses. Posebyen (Old Town) is a glimpse of another time and the site of a lively daily market. WWII history devotees might want to check out the 357-ton German cannon at the Cannon Museum. Families will love a visit to the Dyerpark, where humans can walk over a catwalk while northland animals roam freely below.
Esbjerg, Denmark
Esbjerg isn’t very old, dating from the 1880’s, but the town looks like its founders launched an elaborate architectural fantasy. What you notice first are its incredible red brick buildings. Gabled, arched, quoined, crenellated and decorated to a fare-thee-well. Some remind you of Venetian palazzos, others of Tuscan or Moorish castles. Equally fanciful is the very modern sculpture called “Man Meets the Sea” that dominates the beach promenade - Easter Island in the North Sea!
List (Sylt), Germany
The hearty people of List on the island of Sylt like to brag that they are the northernmost residents of Germany. Jutting into the North Sea like a giant wishbone, the island’s shape-shifting landscape of finely powdered beaches and migrating sand dunes is constantly changing. Hike through the dunes, populated by flocks of free-roaming sheep, watch for 300 species of birds in the marshes or listen for the local dialect called Sölring in the shops.
Hamburg, Germany
Hamburg flaunts its enormous wealth with a muscular presence that is backed by 2000 years of mercantile history. A capital of the powerful Hanseatic League, the city’s position on the Elbe River made it a natural center for trade. The copper-spired tower of the 647 room Rathous (Town Hall) testifies to Hamburg’s importance, while the exquisite baroque church of St. Michael portrays another side of Hamburg begging to be experienced. Take a night tour of the lively warehouse district or the famous St. Pauli entertainment district, and you’ll see why the lights never go out in Hamburg!
